“I’ll speed up, but why is there a man chasing us with unnatural speed?”
Jesse turned around, facing the front of the car. He looked like he was about to throw up. “That’s Gideon’s guard dog, Lorenzo. He draws magic from his tattoos, giving him supernatural power. It would be awesome if he wasn’t trying to destroy us right now.”
“No kidding,” Redman said, driving as fast as he possibly could. “Any chance his boss calls him back to help with a TV mounting close to Melbourne?”
“I wouldn’t count on it. Let’s just get out of here. He might give up once we get out of the Peninsula. I hope so, at least.”
Redman shook his head in disbelief. It was indeed turning out to be an odd day. First, he’d expected to be meeting with a plumber, but it turned out that said plumber was also somebody who fixed cabling issues and helped people answer the age-old question of ‘how to easily enhance my wifi signal’. And now that plumber/data expert had sent his magic guard dog after them.
What have you done, Mavis?
Casting another glance into the mirror, Redman watched in horror as Lorenzo slapped his chest, then began to conjure a ball of flame in his open palm. Suddenly the fire shot forward, toward the car. Redman swerved off the road for a second and the fireball flew past, exploding a hundred metres ahead of them.
“Did you know he shoots fireballs?” Redman asked as they got back onto the road.
Jesse simply shook his head, still pale and horrified.
“Man, at least tell me where we’re going,” said Redman as the exit to the Mornington Peninsula bubble appeared in the distance. “Once we’re out in the cavern, I don’t know what I’m doing!”
Jesse finally seemed to snap out of his shock, shaking his head. “New Adelaide. We’re going to New Adelaide.”
